AI, Security & Hosting: 5 Stories From The Past Week

The web hosting industry is entering a new phase — and artificial intelligence is increasingly at the centre of it.

Over the past seven days, we’ve seen major developments involving AI infrastructure, data centres, hosting security and the software that powers millions of websites.

While some of these stories might sound like they belong firmly in the world of big technology companies, they have a direct connection to something much more familiar: the website you use every day.

Whether you’re running a small business website, an online shop, a blog or are thinking about building your first website, the technology underneath the internet is changing rapidly.

Here are five of the biggest developments from the past week and what they could mean for website owners.

$45 billion AI computing deal

One of the biggest technology stories of the past week came from the AI infrastructure market.

Anthropic is reportedly set to spend $45 billion over six years renting AI computing capacity from UK-founded data-centre operator Nscale. The agreement is expected to provide Anthropic with access to around 460MW of computing capacity, using Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin technology. [Reuters]

That is an extraordinary amount of computing power.

And although this isn’t traditional website hosting, it illustrates something increasingly important for the wider hosting industry: demand for computing infrastructure is exploding.

AI applications require vastly more computing power than many conventional websites. As companies race to build increasingly capable AI systems, enormous amounts of new data-centre capacity are being planned and constructed.

That has a knock-on effect across the infrastructure industry.

Servers need electricity.

They need networking.

They need storage.

And increasingly, they need sophisticated cooling systems.

For ordinary website owners, the immediate impact might not be obvious. But the infrastructure required to run the internet is becoming increasingly intertwined with the infrastructure being built for AI.

It also helps explain why the definition of “hosting” is changing.

The server sitting behind a website is no longer simply a box designed to serve HTML pages. Modern infrastructure is supporting everything from ecommerce and streaming to databases, cloud applications and AI workloads.

The next few years could therefore see enormous investment in the infrastructure underpinning the web.

AI demand for data-centre cooling

The AI boom isn’t just creating demand for more servers.

It’s creating a huge demand for ways to keep those servers cool.

That was highlighted this week when energy technology company SLB announced that it had agreed to acquire thermal-management specialist Kelvion for $3.4 billion in cash, while also assuming around $700 million in debt.

The deal is specifically aimed at expanding SLB’s position in data-centre infrastructure, with the company pointing to rapidly growing demand driven by AI. [Reuters]

Why should someone running a small website care about cooling technology?

Because it demonstrates just how much the infrastructure behind online services is changing.

AI processors can generate enormous amounts of heat. Traditional cooling methods aren’t always sufficient for the latest high-density computing environments, meaning data-centre operators are increasingly looking at advanced thermal-management technologies.

That matters to the hosting industry because data centres are ultimately where websites and online applications live.

As demand for computing increases, hosting infrastructure has to become more efficient and more powerful.

It also highlights an issue that could become increasingly important in the coming years: energy.

Running millions of servers requires huge amounts of electricity, while AI data centres can consume vastly more power than traditional hosting environments.

For the hosting industry, access to affordable electricity, sufficient cooling and available data-centre capacity could become increasingly important factors in where infrastructure is built.

New cPanel vulnerability

While AI dominated much of the technology news, security provided an important reminder that the traditional risks facing web hosting haven’t disappeared.

On 27 August, cPanel published details of a vulnerability affecting its Domain Parking functionality.

The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-65643, could allow an authenticated cPanel account holder with the ability to add parked or addon domains to create arbitrary files on the server.

The potentially serious part is what happens after successful exploitation: cPanel says an attacker could obtain code execution with root-level privileges, potentially giving them control over the server and the websites, accounts and databases hosted on it. [cpanel.net]

cPanel has released patched versions and recommends updating to the latest available release.

For website owners, this is an important reminder of something that is easy to overlook.

Your website’s security isn’t determined solely by whether you’ve installed an SSL certificate or chosen a strong password.

There are multiple layers underneath a website.

Your CMS has vulnerabilities.

Plugins can have vulnerabilities.

Themes can have vulnerabilities.

The operating system can have vulnerabilities.

And the hosting control panel itself can have vulnerabilities.

That’s why keeping the underlying hosting environment updated is so important.

For customers on managed hosting, much of this maintenance can be handled by the hosting provider. For people running their own servers or using unmanaged infrastructure, keeping software patched can become a much more significant responsibility.

The lesson is simple: hosting security is about the entire stack, not just the website itself.

UK data-centre electricity problem

The AI infrastructure race is also creating problems closer to home.

A report published this week highlighted growing pressure on the UK’s electricity grid from data-centre development.

The UK is dealing with a backlog of proposed data-centre projects seeking grid connections, with concerns that some applications may be speculative and could occupy capacity that genuine projects need. Ofgem has been considering reforms intended to discourage projects that aren’t sufficiently advanced from joining the connection queue. [WIRED]

This is particularly relevant to the UK hosting market.

The UK is one of Europe’s major technology and data-centre hubs, but building more computing infrastructure isn’t simply a matter of finding a piece of land and installing servers.

Data centres need enormous amounts of reliable electricity.

As AI increases demand for computing power, the availability of suitable power connections is becoming a major infrastructure issue.

There is also a geographical angle.

European AI data-centre developers are increasingly looking beyond traditional locations in major cities in search of cheaper land, lower energy costs and faster access to electricity. Reuters reported last week that developers are exploring less conventional locations as they look for viable sites. [Reuters]

For UK website owners, this probably won’t change their hosting bill overnight.

But over the longer term, the availability and cost of data-centre infrastructure could influence the economics of hosting and cloud computing.

It could also accelerate investment in newer, more energy-efficient infrastructure.

Political opposition for AI data-centres

The final development this week shows that the AI infrastructure boom isn’t happening without controversy.

Data-centre development is increasingly facing resistance in parts of the United States, with concerns ranging from electricity consumption and water usage to environmental impact and the effect on local communities. [The Guardian]

That resistance is becoming an increasingly important part of the AI infrastructure story.

The technology industry wants to build enormous amounts of computing capacity to meet demand for AI.

Communities, meanwhile, have to deal with the physical consequences of those facilities.

And this creates an unusual situation for the hosting industry.

The more dependent the digital economy becomes on AI and cloud infrastructure, the more important physical infrastructure becomes.

For decades, the internet has felt almost entirely virtual to most people.

But the AI boom is making the physical side of the internet impossible to ignore.

Behind every website, cloud service and AI application are buildings filled with computers, connected to power grids and telecommunications networks.

The next stage of the internet could therefore be shaped as much by energy, land and infrastructure availability as it is by software.

What does this mean for website owners?

The infrastructure behind the internet is becoming more important.

AI is increasing demand for computing power at an extraordinary rate, while security threats are becoming more sophisticated and the physical requirements of running data centres are becoming harder to ignore.

For somebody looking to build a website, that doesn’t mean you suddenly need to understand data-centre engineering.

But it does reinforce why choosing a hosting provider shouldn’t simply come down to finding the cheapest introductory price.

Performance, uptime, security, support and the quality of the underlying infrastructure all matter.

And as websites increasingly incorporate AI tools, ecommerce functionality, databases and third-party services, the demands placed on hosting are likely to increase too.
